Do you suffer from chronic pain? You certainly aren’t alone – the Institute of Medicine (IOM) reports that one in every three Americans is living with some form of long-term pain, which accounts for about 116 million people.
According to TIME, the number of people in the U.S. with chronic pain surpasses the total amount of patients with cancer, diabetes and heart disease, and many of these people are not receiving proper treatment due to misuse of pain relievers, lack of adequate information, lack of health insurance and other factors.
This affliction reportedly costs its sufferers upwards of $635 billion annually between treatment and lost income, and this figure would surely increase if the IOM report included children and members of the military.
American Academy of Pain Medicine president Dr. Perry Fine told the news provider that he is “shocked and surprised at the magnitude [of the problem].”
Many people misdiagnose their aching as “chronic” – the term refers to any pain that lasts for at least 30 to 60 days, particularly when it affects aspects of one’s life.
