North Carolina man robs bank to get health care

Friday, June 24th, 2011

The rising cost of health insurance in the U.S. is causing some people to take drastic measures to ensure that they will be cared for. Just as Richard James Verone of Gastonia, North Carolina, who was recently arrested for robbing a bank. His goal? To go to jail, where he would be sure to receive the health care that he needed.

Walking into Gastonia’s RBC Bank claiming he had a gun earlier this week, the 59-year-old man robbed the financial institution of $1. He then sat and patiently waited for authorities to arrive. According to ABC News, the act was done to “show that his motives were medical, not monetary.” Verone, unemployed, suffers from a growth in his chest and two ruptured disks.

“I’m sort of a logical person and that was my logic, what I came up with,” he told the news provider. “If it is called manipulation, then out of necessity because I need medical care, then I guess I am manipulating the courts to get medical care.

The news source says that Verone will stand before a judge on June 28 for a larceny charge, and is not likely to get more than a year in jail for his crime. He is being held on $2,000 bail.
